No Heat or No Cooling

A system that won't turn on at all, or runs but never actually reaches the temperature you've set, is the clearest sign something needs attention. This can show up in an AC, furnace, heat pump, or boiler alike, and the longer it goes unaddressed the more likely a small issue turns into a full system failure at the worst possible time.

Unusual Noises & Smells

Banging, grinding, squealing, or rattling sounds usually point to a mechanical problem, not normal operation. A burning smell or a gas odor near a furnace or boiler is more urgent — if you smell gas, leave the area and call for help right away rather than investigating it yourself.

Rising Energy Bills or Inconsistent Temperatures

A noticeable jump in heating or cooling costs without a change in how you're using the system often means it's working harder than it should to do the same job — a sign of a developing mechanical issue, a duct leak, or an aging system losing efficiency. Uneven temperatures between rooms can point to similar underlying causes.

Water Leaks or Ice Buildup

Water pooling near an indoor unit, a boiler, or a furnace usually indicates a leak or condensation problem that's worth having looked at before it causes water damage. Heavy or persistent ice buildup on an outdoor AC or heat pump unit, beyond a light frost that clears on its own, is also a sign something isn't running the way it should.
