Earwigs depend on that kind of sustained ground moisture, hiding under mulch, leaf litter, and landscape debris during the day and becoming active at night, and Louisiana's slow draining clay gives them a longer window of suitable habitat right next to the house than a better drained soil type would provide. When a significant rain event, whether an ordinary summer thunderstorm or a tropical system, saturates that ground cover completely, earwigs are pushed toward higher, drier ground, and a home's foundation is often the nearest option.
