After a rainy stretch, which the state sees regularly through spring and into summer, earwig numbers around a foundation can climb quickly, and enough of them will wander in through door thresholds and basement window gaps to become a genuine indoor nuisance even though they rarely cause any real damage. Landscaped suburban yards, common across Long Island, the Hudson Valley, and much of upstate New York, tend to generate more earwig calls than dense urban blocks simply because there is more mulch, mature planting, and organic debris close to the foundation for earwigs to hide in.
