Unlike Kentucky and Maine, Louisiana is home to native scorpion species, including the striped bark scorpion and the southern devil scorpion, both naturally occurring in the state rather than accidental introductions, with documented presence extending into East Baton Rouge and Orleans parishes among others. That native status means scorpion sightings in Louisiana are a genuine, if still comparatively minor, part of the state's pest landscape rather than the rare curiosity they represent in colder states outside these species's range. Scorpions in Louisiana tend to hide during the day in woodpiles, under bark, in stacked outdoor materials, and in undisturbed storage areas, becoming active and more visible at night, and homes near wooded or rural land with plenty of outdoor debris and cover give them more opportunity to move indoors than a well maintained urban yard would. While scorpion stings from Louisiana's native species are generally not medically serious, the discomfort and surprise factor is enough that scorpion control calls do occur across the state, more so than in Kentucky or Maine but still well below the demand seen for the state's more prominent pest categories.
