Beyond the well known Formosan termite threat concentrated in and around New Orleans, termite control demand across Louisiana is also driven by something more procedural: a wood destroying insect report, commonly called a WDIR, is a standard, frequently required part of home sales and refinances throughout the state, and Louisiana Administrative Code specifically requires that report be issued by someone holding the state's dedicated termite control license rather than a general pest control credential. That real estate driven inspection cycle means a large share of Louisiana termite calls come from pending home sales rather than a homeowner noticing active termite damage on their own, since lenders and title companies routinely require a current WDIR before closing. Outside the New Orleans metro, native eastern subterranean termites remain the dominant species across most of Louisiana's 64 parishes, active on a more typical swarm schedule than the aggressive, faster growing Formosan colonies concentrated closer to the coast. That legal, transaction driven inspection requirement, layered on top of the state's genuine termite pressure, keeps termite control demand tied to Louisiana's real estate market in a way most other pest services aren't.

Licensing in Louisiana: Louisiana regulates structural pest control through the Structural Pest Control Commission, a board operating under the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry that is distinct from the state's Horticulture Commission, the separate LDAF board that licenses landscape horticulturists and nursery stock dealers rather than pest control work. Rather than issuing one general license, the Structural Pest Control Commission licenses by specific phase of work: general pest control, termite control, commercial vertebrate control, structural fumigation, commodity fumigation, and ship fumigation are each treated as their own credential, and a company or individual must be separately licensed in whichever phase they actually perform. Termite control in particular carries its own dedicated license and its own required coursework, distinct from general household pest work, which reflects how central termite activity is to Louisiana's pest control industry given the state's Formosan termite problem. Licensees must complete an approved recertification program every three years to remain active. Wildlife removal falls entirely outside this system: a Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator permit from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, which requires a valid state trapping license and hunting license, is required to remove raccoons, squirrels, or other nuisance animals for pay.
