A water bill that jumps noticeably without a change in how your household is using water is often the first and clearest sign something's leaking somewhere out of sight. Compare a few recent bills if you can. A steady upward trend, rather than a one time spike, points more strongly toward an ongoing leak than a fluke.

Sounds & Warm Spots

Hearing running water when every fixture in the house is off is a strong sign. A warm spot on the floor, especially over a slab foundation, can indicate a hot water line leaking underneath it, sometimes called a slab leak. Both are worth having checked even if you can't see any actual water yet.

Visible Signs Indoors

Discoloration or staining on walls or ceilings, paint or wallpaper that's peeling or bubbling, or a musty smell that doesn't go away with normal cleaning can all point to moisture building up behind a surface. Flooring that feels soft, warped, or spongy underfoot is another sign worth taking seriously, particularly near a bathroom or kitchen.

Signs Outdoors

An unusually green or lush patch of lawn during otherwise dry conditions can mean a supply line is leaking underground and feeding that section of grass. Water pooling near the foundation with no obvious source, like recent rain or a sprinkler, is also worth investigating rather than assuming it will dry up on its own.
