Plumber in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is unusual in that it has no statewide plumbing license at all. Licensing happens entirely at the municipal level, and the two biggest jurisdictions, Philadelphia's Department of Licenses and Inspections and the Allegheny County Health Department covering Pittsburgh, each run their own four year apprenticeship track, exam, and master plumber credential, and a license earned in one doesn't automatically transfer to the other, even for a single job that crosses the boundary. That patchwork sits on top of genuinely old infrastructure: Philadelphia and Pittsburgh's rowhomes and older neighborhoods were largely built during the state's industrial boom decades before galvanized steel and, in some cases, lead pipe gave way to copper and plastic, so a lot of that original supply piping is well past its working life. Pennsylvania's real freeze thaw cycling each winter adds its own wear too, repeatedly stressing older pipe joints and fittings rather than causing one hard freeze event. Between a licensing system that varies by city and pipe materials that vary by decade, Pennsylvania plumbing work depends heavily on local knowledge.
